Understanding the I/D/M states

Some providers like to give you a more detailed view of your child's progress than a simple "done or not done". If your provider tracks progress this way, each of your child's goals will move through a few states as the skill is introduced, practised and finally mastered.

You'll see each goal as a small coloured marker with a letter inside. Here's what each one means:

Not Started. A blank box means that the skill has not yet been introduced into the sessions. This will come shortly according to the syllabus followed.

Introduced. The skill has been introduced to the learner and they have had a practice.

Developing. The skill has been practised more than once and key elements are being refined by the learner. The learner is showing improvement each time the skill is attempted.

Mastered. The learner has attempted the skill multiple times and is showing competence in all areas. Once mastered, this skill is complete for the stage.

TIP

Most of the time your child will sit in Developing for a while - that's where the real learning happens. Mastered is a deliberate, considered step the teacher takes when the skill is reliable, not something they award after a single good attempt.
